‘Woodrow Wilson Center Spotlights ILSI RF/Risk Science Institute Report on Nanomaterials
The ILSI Research Foundation/Risk Science Institute’s Nanomaterial Toxicity Screening Working Group report, “Principles for characterizing the potential human health effects from exposure to nanomaterials: elements of a screening strategy” was the focus of a public program sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars on Thursday, October 20. The program is available as a webcast at www.wilsoncenter.org.
The ILSI RF/RSI paper was published that same day in the online journal, Particle and Fibre Toxicology. This is an open access journal published by BioMed Central which has identified the RSI paper as highly accessed, meaning it is on their most viewed list for the past 30 days. The report was hailed by the Wilson Center as a “landmark” document because it provides clear recommendations for developing toxicity screening strategies from a group of international experts who represent a wide variety of disciplines. Understanding the physiochemical properties of nanomaterials is a key to deciding how to test these materials which may have different translocation capacity compared to larger materials. In vitro tests alone are not recommended; rather these tests should be paired with appropriate in vivo tests.’
