The establishment of a new DST-NRF SARChI research chair in science communication at Stellenbosch University in January 2015 created an important opportunity to assess the scientific basis for effective communication about science; launch a dynamic portfolio of research projects to address science communication challenges in South African society and deliver outcomes that are relevant and meaningful to South African society. This research chair is the first chair of its kind in Africa to pioneer the development of this academic field across the continent and to create new training and research niches for African students and scholars. Professor Peter Weingart, a renowned scholar in the field of sociology of science, is the chair holder.
We are now waiting applications for a postdoctoral fellow who will work closely with the chair and the rest of the team at CREST to undertake research and advance some of the research themes that have been identified for this chair, namely: (1) The science-media interface; (2) Science communication and social media; (3) Science communication in the areas of health and environment; (4) Science communication: formats and evaluation.
