Fondazione Giannino Bassetti
For Responsibility in Innovation
MissionStatuteWho we areGiannino Bassetti
Mission by Fondazione Giannino Bassetti
The Giannino Bassetti Foundation came into existence in Milan in 1994, becoming a Participation Foundation in 2016. In 2024 it becomes a Ente del Terzo Settore ETS. Its President is Piero Bassetti, and General Secretary Francesco Samorè.
In coherence with the values expressed by the Bassetti family, the Foundation’s aim is to promote responsibility in innovation across both the national and international setting.
An innovative industrialist in the textile industry, Cavaliere del Lavoro Giovanni Bassetti (known as Giannino) was much more than just a successful businessman. He felt that the role of a responsible industrialist was defined and fulfilled by their contribution to the civil development of the society in which they worked. The starting point of the Foundation’s work program is therefore the shared reflection on the meaning of this testimony, revisiting its deepest intuitions and motivations in our contemporary cultural, social, and political reality. As the 1994 version of the Statute states: “To create a new and updated awareness, a new and widespread sense of social, civil, and political responsibility among those who innovate, in the memory of a forerunner“.
In 2016 the Foundation expanded its activities: promoting the practice of responsibility in innovation while taking into account what has become a widespread understanding of its disruptive impact requires more refined tools and new alliances. The organization was registered as a Participation Foundation, opening it up to collaboration with external organizations.
The first to have a representative on the Board of Participants was the Regional Government of Lombardy.
In 2018 the Foundation collaborated in the creation of the Lombardy Regional Forum for Research and Innovation, an independent advisory board whose 10 members are selected through an international call that receives more than 150 applications. The Forum focuses on the responsible governance of research and innovation across the territory of Lombardy.
Foundation thinking and activities are gathered on the website – www.fondazionebassetti.org that you are currently visiting. A constantly nourished online archive of videos, podcasts and articles, a permanent forum on the theme of responsibility in innovation aimed at promoting debate at international level, offering contributions, practices and study findings to a global audience.
International recognition of the pioneering work carried out at the Foundation over the last thirty years can be found in the form of the The Handbook on Responsible Innovation: A Global Resource, published by Edward Elgar in 2019. Foundation collaborator Jonathan Hankins is Co-Editor alongside René Von Schomberg of the European Commission. Thirty texts by the most influential players on an international scale and an interview with Piero Bassetti who reconstructs the approach with which the Foundation opened the field to the concept of responsible innovation.
