“Glocalism” is a peer-reviewed, open access and cross-disciplinary journal that aims at stimulating increasing awareness and knowledge around the new dynamics that characterise the glocal reality“.

The current issue of Glocalism is entitled “Feeding the Planet. Energy For life“, and contains articles by (amongst others) former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, and Mayor of Milan Giuliano Pisapia, within a broad group of authors that includes academics and experts from across the globe.

The latest issue of the online journal Glocalism, also contains the article “Collective food purchasing networks in Italy as a case study of responsible innovation“, by J. Hankins, C. Grasseni. Both authors are long time collaborators with the Bassetti Foundation.

In their article, Grasseni and Hankins present work-in-progress insights into solidarity economies, and in particular collective purchasing groups, as a form of active citizenship that could re-orient the current debate on responsible innovation. The article is based upon fieldwork conducted in Italy and the USA.

The authors argue that “Faced by the environmental, financial, and social non-sustainability of current food provisioning practices (demonstrated by food insecurity, environmental concerns, malnutrition and increasing health issues in industrialized countries), grassroots networks are rethinking the core elements of contemporary society: the market, the commons, and the role of the individual: citizen, consumer, and producer”. They go on to argue that alternative food networks (as these groups are collectively known) could be defined as a grassroots form of RI that is poiesis-intensive rather than capital-intensive.
