Milan: Who writes the history of a city in transformation?
24 September 2015
On Monday 28 September the university workshop “Milan: who writes the history of a city in transformation” began. The workshop was organized by the Bassetti foundation, Lapsus Association and Globus and Locus, in collaboration with the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Milan.
Thinking about the relationship between 19th century Milan and that of today allows us to re-visit a thought process initiated in 1959 by Piero Bassetti and Giacomo Corna Pellegrini with their book ‘Le redini del potere’; and followed up on decades later with a publication drawn from the Bassetti archives ‘Milano tra ricostruzione e globalizzazione’ (Rubbettino, 2011).
In this cycle of 10 lessons we begin with the argument that the first ingredient if looking to understand a city is that knowledge and power meet, in what we call innovation. We wish to look beyond the everyday phenomena of Milan, and the facts that surround its great events over the years. Instead we look at the quality of these processes, with their waste and contradictions.
To this end we find humanistic understanding precious, in its relationship to exercising a critical view, that we at the Foundation have called Responsible Innovation for over 15 years.
10 meetings, every Monday from 16:30 to 18:30, open to students and public.
